All in a Row

"All in a Row," oil on panel, 6" x 6" (framed) Here's a mini I did in the fall on a trip to San Francisco, and just now got framed up. It's a row of small eucalyptus trees I found between a road and a park, having gotten lost on a walk. For some reason the shadow cast by a railing and the amputated branch, in that light, spoke to my mood after a hot long day in the sun. But the scene doesn't depict precisely how I was. That's the freaky thing about painting, about spending time with something and really taking it in. Agonizing a bit. The important thing is that now, months later, the finished work serves as a touchstone, irrelevant in many ways of what it was meant to depict. Seeing it again transports me back, like a teleporter of the emotional memories. I look upon this small piece and the way the light was, the noise of cars and an airplane overhead, the slight tinge of citrus in the air, how hungry I was starting to get, and

A Few of the Things it Chops - SOLD

24" x 48", collage, spray, and acrylic on birch panel School is ending and the household is busier. We're getting ready to set out on a 2,500 mile journey by car in a week and have only just, I hope, secured all the campsites and hotels. Oh, and we've just received news about our immigration status which amounts to a punch in the gut. But the painting, happily, keeps apace. In a time of perpetual change and movement, the feeling of running harder and faster only to stay in the same place, it's been important for me to cling to stuff, like a primordial lifeform on a deep-sea vent. I'm reluctant to throw out old familiar clothing and whenever the flux thwarts routines and anchors, I frantically reassert them. This piece is heavily collaged, meant to reflect, I think, the scattered sensations I've taken in and struggled to assemble into some sort of meaningful picture. It should be with me at TOAE in July. Just need to get my suction cups off of it.

"Morning Highway," oil on panel, 5" x 5" Growing up there wasn't much art at home, let alone original art. But my grandmother did have a large framed oil of a very empty country road surrounded by trees. A friend from her work life had created and given it to her, she said - that's all I ever knew about it. No one paid it much mind, myself included, as dominant as it was in her living room where we sat to watch TV, fight for control of the converter, and digest supper. I used to stare at the painting and wonder, though, what techniques the artist used to create the sinewy trees and impasto road, and why just this road in the middle of nowhere, with nothing else to embellish it. I stared at the picture for years, not conscious about the questions I was asking or even that I was doing something more than resting my eyes somewhere, but allowing it to work on me and seep in, osmotically.
